Asahidake in Winter: A Visitor's Guide

This guide is for reference only. Always check the official sites for accurate schedules. Services and schedules can change from time to time.
Asahidake (旭岳), at 2,291 m Hokkaido's highest peak, is a winter mountain with no resort skiing. The Daisetsuzan Asahidake Ropeway climbs to Sugatami Station at 1,600 m in about 10 minutes, and many people see the rime from the car, take in the view around the station and ride back down. The ropeway company warns anyone but advanced winter mountaineers to stay out of the Asahidake area.
We read the official pages on 3 November 2026. Ropeway hours from January 2027 had not been posted by then, so look at the official site before you set out.
The ropeway
No cars run from 16 November to 10 December 2026. From 11 December they leave every 20 minutes, and you can't reserve a seat. For the rest of December the first car goes up at 9:00 and the last one comes down at 15:40. That should make the last car up about 15:20, but ask when you buy your ticket: if you miss the last car down, it is reported to the police as a mountain accident.
The return fare for winter 2026-27 is ¥3,000 for adults and ¥1,750 for children, according to the winter page. The ¥2,800 still shown on the main site was a limited rate for 1 to 15 November, according to the ropeway's notice.
Wind or lightning stops the ropeway. Its home page shows whether it is running, along with the Sugatami weather and a live camera. If you have a flight to catch, leave plenty of slack.
What you can do
On a clear, still day at -15°C or colder you may see diamond dust, and it shows up best in the afternoon against a shaded background. You get the best view of the rime-coated trees from the car. Sun pillars sometimes form around 15:00 to 16:00 when conditions allow, and you can watch them from the car or the Sugatami deck. In December, make sure you are on a car down by 15:40.
At the bottom, the Asahidake Visitor Centre rents snowshoes and cross-country sets at ¥1,000 a day, and its map marks courses of 2.5, 3.0 and 7.5 km around Asahidake Onsen. Opening hours are 9:00 to 17:00. It shuts over New Year, and from 16 to 27 November 2026 for floor work. Guided programmes are for Japanese speakers, and the ropeway does not rent snowshoes, winter clothing or skis.
There is no ATM nearby, so bring cash, and download an offline map before you go.
If you plan to ski
Experienced skiers come for a few marked courses, some of them compacted, but this is a national park special protection zone, with none of the services a resort would offer.
- There is no patrol on the courses and no rescue team on site. You pay for any rescue.
- Skis and boards go on the ropeway only once the course opening is decided after a snow inspection. Last season that was 11 December. The 2026-27 date is not confirmed.
- Avalanche zones lie beside the marked courses, and the survival map names them.
- Off-course, carry a beacon, shovel, probe, skins, warm layers and a light. Go with a local guide who knows the mountain.
- File a mountain plan with Hokkaido Police and an entry form at the ropeway.
We found no alpine ski rental at Asahidake. If you are new to skiing, Canmore Ski Village in Higashikawa has beginner courses and equipment rental, though its 2026-27 opening date is not yet posted.
Getting there
Route 66, the いで湯号, is the bus to the mountain. It does not wait for flights, and it stops at JR Asahikawa Station, the airport, ひがしかわ道草館 and Asahidake Onsen. This timetable was revised on 1 October 2025 and is the one posted now.

The last bus up reaches Asahidake after the last ropeway car in December, so take an earlier one. In the table effective 1 December 2026, adult fares to Asahidake are ¥2,300 from the station, ¥1,650 from the airport and ¥1,450 from 道草館. There is no return discount.
By car, the ropeway site gives 1 hour 10 minutes from JR Asahikawa Station, 40 minutes from 道草館 and about 3 hours from Sapporo. The airport is about an hour away. Expect snow on the road into Asahidake Onsen. The ropeway car park is free from November to May, with 150 spaces, and overnight parking is refused.

A distillery tour
Tankyu Distillery (丹丘蒸留所) stands in Higashikawa, 35 minutes by car from the Asahidake Ropeway on Google Maps (allow longer in snow), and our water comes from the underground springs of Mount Asahidake. Our tour lasts 60 minutes and costs ¥2,000 per person, with a tasting of our craft gin and New Made Spirits. We also serve gin and tonic made with our own gin. Drivers take a mini bottle home instead.
Each language (English, Japanese, Mandarin and Korean) has its own days, and bookings need at least 24 hours' notice. The distillery is open from 10:00 to 17:00, including public holidays. It closes from 1 to 3 January, and we sometimes take other days off. Guests must be 20 or over to taste; middle-school age and above may accompany them, but preschool children cannot join. We are 10 minutes by car from the airport, so a car or taxi is the best way to reach us.
Find Tankyu Distillery on Google Maps.
Dinner in Higashikawa
Evening food at Asahidake Onsen mostly means your hotel, and K's House has only a kitchen and shop, so if you have a car, you could eat in town. Hours come from the November 2026 food map, which warns that winter hours can differ, so phone before you go.
